Persons with disabilities and specific access needs are participating more and more frequently in tourism activities as a result of their growing economic and social inclusion. However, there are still many impediments and barriers that hinder normalized access to tourism facilities, products and services.

Accessibility is not a requirement only for persons with disabilities, who already account for more than 15% of the world population, but rather it has myriad beneficiaries. All people, at some point in their life, will need the practical implementation of universal accessibility. Tourism destinations that respond to these requirements will adapt their offerings accordingly, and in so doing they will also improve the tourist experience and the quality of life of all its citizens and visitors.

In light of these essential premises of accessible tourism, the 1st UNWTO International Conference on Tourism and Accessibility, co-organized with the Government of Ecuador, has the following objectives:

  1. To promote universal accessibility in the tourism sector as a factor of both inclusion and competitiveness;
  1. To highlight the leadership and coordinated work of public administrations, the business fabric and organizations of persons with disabilities;
  1. To illustrate success stories in making accessible the different links in the tourism value chain and products; and
  1. To demonstrate the great potential of innovation and new technologies in accessible tourism.

In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the need for sound and planned management of tourism destinations. From traditional marketing and promotion boards the trend is for Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) to become leading organizations with a broader mandate which includes strategic planning, coordination and management of a full range of activities within an adequate governance structure with the integration of different stakeholders operating in the destination under common goals. Destinations where such an organization is not still in place are increasingly creating or plan to create a DMO as the organizational entity to lead the way.

These developments stem from the urge to achieve an optimal management of the destination which ensures that the various authorities, all relevant stakeholders and professionals are coordinated by a leading entity under a coherent strategy and a collective vision in pursuit of a common goal, the competitiveness and sustainability of the destination. This approach should also engage the residents and the local community in the tourism policy and decision-making process and its implementation in a truly Public (P) – Private (P) – Community (C) approach. International Seminar on Women’s Empowerment in the Tourism Sector
12 April 2018

Why women empowerment in tourism matters?

The importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls has been underscored in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5- Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030. Gender equality implies a society in which women and men enjoy the same opportunities, outcomes, rights and obligations in all spheres of life (UNPFA, 2017). A critical aspect of promoting gender equality is the empowerment of women, with a focus on identifying and redressing power imbalances and giving women full autonomy to manage their own lives. Women’s empowerment is vital to sustainable development and the realization of the human rights for all. Moreover, evidence shows that promoting equality will speed up the progress towards the achievement of the SDGs, (UNICEF, 2011) and must be a central part of any strategy to create more sustainable and inclusive economies and societies (OECD, 2014).  Read more

Although there are multiple and varied definitions of cultural tourism, we will initially take into account its definition established from a broad perspective by the UNWTO in 1995 as “all movements of people to meet the human need for diversity, aimed at raising the cultural level of the individual, providing new knowledge, experiences and encounters.” The same source gives us a narrower definition that refers to the “movements of persons for essentially cultural motivations such as study tours, performing arts and other cultural tours, travel to festivals and other cultural events, visit to sites and monuments".
