UNWTO Ulysses Awards for Innovation announced
A mobile application transporting visitors to the harbor of Arromanches in Normandy, France during World War II and an ecotourism project with a social entrepreneurship focus in Malaysia were among the innovative tourism initiatives recognized by the 2013 UNWTO Ulysses Awards for Innovation. Now on its tenth year, the Awards celebrate outstanding contributions in the field of tourism across the globe (Madrid, Spain, 22 January 2014).

International tourism exceeds expectations with arrivals up by 52 million in 2013
International tourist arrivals grew by 5% in 2013, reaching a record 1,087 million arrivals, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Despite global economic challenges, international tourism results were well above expectations, with an additional 52 million international tourists travelling the world in 2013. For 2014, UNWTO forecasts 4% to 4.5% growth - again, above the long term projections.

UNWTO activities at FITUR 2014

UN General Assembly: Tourism can foster sustainable development in Central America
Sustainable tourism is an ally of poverty eradication in Central America and the three dimensions of sustainable development - social, economic and environmental - as reflected in the UN resolution on "Sustainable tourism and sustainable development in Central America". The 193-member UN General Assembly adopted the resolution unanimously during its 68th session. This represents an important step towards mainstreaming sustainable tourism in the international development agenda and the post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (New York, USA, 22 December 2013).

UNWTO gains observer status to the Enhanced Integrated Framework Board
In recognition of the importance of tourism as a key export sector for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), UNWTO has been granted observer status to the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF). The EIF is an Aid for Trade multi-donor programme supporting LDCs to be more active players in the global trading system by tackling supply-side constraints to trade (Geneva, Switzerland, 17 December 2013).

Addressing the Royal Aeronautical Society at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) headquarters, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai called for increased visa facilitation and the liberalization of air transport (Montreal, 5 December 2013).

International tourism an engine for the economic recovery
In the first nine months of 2013, international tourism grew by 5% according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. The number of international tourist arrivals reported by destinations around the world increased by some 41 million between January and September, growing above UNWTO’s initial forecast and creating an important stimulus to the receiving economies.
